Sledge Hockey - getting back out there

Nick had sledge hockey again today.
He had been off the ice for about a month, and even though we had brought the sledge home, and planned to go skating as a family, we didn't get out.

Leading up to hockey practice Nick was so upset, he was crying.
"I don't want to go".

We told him that he had to go. We talked about why he didn't want to go, and he said he didn't like hockey anymore.
He was crying up until we got him on the ice.

And then he was all smiles.
I was a little hesitant to make him go, but I am glad that I did. He had a lot of fun and I could see him getting stronger on the ice.
I wish we had more time to get him out there more and get him stronger on his sledge.
Hopefully we will all get some family skating time.

Katheryn likes watching hockey, and we have said that we might be able to get her into sledge hockey next year. Nick actually does better (and shows off) when she is on the ice with him.

We went out for dinner afterwards. Katheryn decided she wanted to dress up!

My blog

I have been battling with the direction of my blog for a while.
Both the time needed to properly keep it up to date, the reason for writing, if I even have an audience, and also the privacy of my children and the fact that Nick is getting older and might not want his medical stuff shared online.

I love my blog (even though I haven't been spending a lot of time on it lately). I am always looking for things that would be helpful.I say that I want to blog less and less, but then when I go through my pictures I want to talk about all of it. I want to keep that memory. And I think that is why I want to blog. For myself. As a way to keep my memories alive.

Otherwise, I just have a folder full of pictures and no context.

Do I need to blog about family and every day stuff? Sometimes yes. Sometimes it is looking back at the every day that I see a change.
But then I also want to keep medical stuff private. But why am I talking about spina bifida if not about the medical stuff.

I could make my blog private, but the whole point is for people who have received the spina bifida diagnosis, or people who are looking to see what spina bifida looks like. To find this blog. To normalize spina bifida. And it comes with some medical challenges.

I don’t want my kids photographs to be stolen and used illegally or for some kind of porn website (and I made some changes to help prevent this).
I don’t want to kids to come at me in a couple of years accusing me of embarrassing them and breaking their privacy. And then I hear from families who have gone to my blog or I see if posted somewhere, and I think this is why I do this.

I left my blog for almost 2 months. The last post was about new braces. 7 ½ years of blogging and I end with new braces?! No.

So I am still not sure what I am going to do. I am working to update over the last 2 months. So I guess that means right now I’m going to keep going.

Our dogs

Family picture time!

We are so lucky with these dogs!

Rory is still a puppy, about 18 months old. And she doesn't run, she hops. We affectionately call her bouncy ball because that is what she does. She bounces!

Rory also has her own bed, her own toys and is very excited (overly excited) when someone comes into the house. But she doesn't jump at the door. When someone knocks on the door, she runs to the door and then quietly sits and waits

Chuva is now 5. And she has stolen my heart.... And she knows it.
Chuva we affectionately call cannon ball because she will push through anything in her way to do what she wants to do. Sometimes it is the children, or tables or chairs. She loves leaning against you because she loves you.

She loves the children. And is very protective of the family and the house. She is not quiet when someone is at the door and barks aggressively at anyone who is at the door. (We are working on this).

If I'm on the couch, this is usually how I end up

 Actually, more like this...

New Years Cottage Fun!

Every year we go to the cottage and have lots of cold-snow fun!
And this year was no different

Nick was enjoying the snow more than other years

And the dogs were in love!

In fact, they dogs spent most of their time outside. It didn't matter if it was snowing and they got covered in snow. They both loved the snow!

Of course the humans loved the snow as well.

The snow wasn't that great for sledding (the sleds wouldn't go down the hill) but it was good for making snowmen

We tried getting Nick's crutches in the snow, but he really just wanted to crawl, or be pulled in the sled

Katheryn and I made a snowman!

It was a bit windy on New Years night.
The snowman had a party and was doing the limbo!

Nick enjoys the snow, but loved the hot chocolate and cuddles when it was time to go in!

We had brought all of our skating stuff to go skating, but I was sick our whole time away and we didn't go.

New Year! 2017!

Happy New Year!
We were up at the cottage again this new Years and did some crafts to celebrate!
Of course I looked at Pintrest to get lots of ideas to do

We made our own hats, and New Years crowns

We all answered questions and put it in a time capsule to open next year

We had our treasure hunt for pictures from the year.
But as usual I had lots and pictures. We were going to divide into teams and find specific pictures. But the kids were excited at the beginning and then got bored. But they liked finding all of the pictures over the weekend that they didn't find during the game.

Everyone was excited to start celebrating once it got dark

And we got a Happy New Year picture!

Excited for 2017!
